Sylvia Plath inspires us all in various and wonderful ways. She is in many respects a form of comfort to us, which is something that Esther Greenwood expresses in The Bell Jar , about a bath: "There must be quite a few things a hot bath won't cure, but I don't know many of them. Whenever I'm sad I'm going to die, or so nervous I can't sleep, or in love with somebody I won't be seeing for a week, I slump down just so far and then I say: 'I'll go take a hot bath.'" This is absolutely fabulous!
ReplyDeleteNice! I can't wait to get mine! Love the other poets they've selected, too (although I wish Merwin had been included).

Ooh must grovel to American friends. Thanks for this info Peter.
ReplyDeleteAh, yes. There is that little detail about having passed on...

ReplyDeleteI wish Anne Sexton were one of them, too. I think her influence is by far greater than that of Levertov, there's practically no comparison. Let alone Lowell's compared to Hayden's.
ReplyDeleteI believe they could have been more creative and opt for another photo of Plath instead of using the same one again and again as if there weren't any other whatsoever, and we know there ARE and BETTER.
When looking at the small images... Hayden, Cummings and Levertov were the only 3 I recognized. (I purposely didn't look at the names) Actually I thought, Denise Levertov... no they would be including her! Thought she was more obscure than that.
