Sylvia Plath Collections: The Hughes Family Album

In previous years, I have created item-level catalogues for some of Sylvia Plath's scrapbooks (and one of Ted Hughes). I am happy to say that I am in the position to provide a page by page, photograph by photograph description of the Hughes Family Album assembled by Sylvia Plath between [1956] and 1962 that sold recently at Sotheby's.

No, I did not buy it. I wish! Rather, I was able to work with photographs of all the pages. The previous catalogs are as follows:

High School scrapbook (Lilly Library)

Smith College scrapbook (Lilly Library)

Ted Hughes publications scrapbook (Emory University)

In addition to these above, Plath maintained, with less enthusiasm I think, a publications clipping scrapbook which is held by Smith College. However, the volume was disassembled and by that I mean individual clipped publications have been removed to folders for each respective work (the paper of the scrapbooks is very acidic, and the tape used was, of course, bad...Basic tape and archives are not friends). I will endeavor to present that to you such that it is next month.

In a letter from Plath to her mother on 1 April 1957, she wrote, "I want to start a scrapbook. Our life together" (Vol II, 103). On the 12th of April that same year she reiterated: "I want to get a sumptuous scrapbook at home for Ted’s clippings & mine: also one for pics of us & for our children" (113). Pages 1 through 24 of the Hughes Family Album reflect September 1956 to December 1959; pages 25 through 49 represent, approximately, April 1960 to April 1962. When Plath and Hughes were in Yaddo there was temporary fear that some of the film from their trip was lost. On 18 September 1959, Plath wrote home, "We’re delighted you found the film. I felt quiet sad to think the parts of our trip we did want to remember---mostly animals and fish in various combination with ourselves---might be lost for good (358)".

This Hughes Family scrapbook was somewhat known as when I was selecting images of Plath and Hughes for The Letters of Sylvia Plath, I acquired a copy of a page from Emory. The three photos in Volume II of SP & TH in front of the car at the outset of their cross country trip in Wellesley, their "Canada encampment", and a photo of SP feeding a deer came from it. But it turns out Emory has a printout of a scan of that page... I did not realize that. I am grateful for David Trinidad's amazing essay "On the Road with Sylvia & Ted" which was helpful in supplying dates and/or date ranges for the summer 1959 cross country trip photographs.

Pages presented on Sotheby's website will be fully described with captions transcribed. Other pages will be summarized. All photographs are black and white prints unless otherwise noted.

One thing that struck me as peculiar about this photograph album is the absence of the Plath family. No photographs of her mother and none of her brother. None of the Schobers, none of her Aunt Frieda Heinrichs. But yet there are photographs of Hugheses and Farrars. I suppose on a literal level it is a "Hughes Family" album, but the lack of the Plath-side was striking to me.

All the photographs have been catalogued in my Sylvia Plath Photographs tab on my Sylvia Plath Archival Documents Hub spreadsheet.

Sylvia Plath's Gravestone Vandalized

The following news story appeared online this morning: HEPTONSTALL, ENGLAND (APFS) - The small village of Heptonstall is once again in the news because of the grave site of American poet Sylvia Plath. The headstone controversy rose to a fever pitch in 1989 when Plath's grave was left unmarked for a long period of time after vandals repeatedly chiseled her married surname Hughes off the stone marker. Author Nick Hornby commented, "I like Plath, but the controversy reaching its fever pitch in the 80s had nothing to do with my book title choice." Today, however, it was discovered that the grave was defaced but in quite an unlikely fashion. This time, Plath's headstone has had slashed-off her maiden name "Plath," so the stone now reads "Sylvia Hughes." A statement posted on Twitter from @masculinistsfortedhughes (Masculinists for Ted Hughes) has claimed responsibility saying that, "We did this because as Ted Hughes' first wife, Sylvia de

Famous Quotes of Sylvia Plath

Sylvia Plath inspires us all in various and wonderful ways. She is in many respects a form of comfort to us, which is something that Esther Greenwood expresses in The Bell Jar , about a bath: "There must be quite a few things a hot bath won't cure, but I don't know many of them. Whenever I'm sad I'm going to die, or so nervous I can't sleep, or in love with somebody I won't be seeing for a week, I slump down just so far and then I say: 'I'll go take a hot bath.'" We read and remember Sylvia Plath for many reasons, many of them deeply personal and private. But we commemorate her, too, in very public ways, as Anna of the long-standing Tumblr Loving Sylvia Plath , has been tracking, in the form of tattoos. (Anna's on Instagram with it too, as SylviaPlathInk .) The above bath quote is among Sylvia Plath's most famous. It often appears here and there and it is stripped of its context. But I think most people will know it is from her nove

Sylvia Plath and McLean Hospital

In August when I was in the final preparations for the tour of Sylvia Plath The Bell Jar sites, I found that I had long been mistaken about a couple of things. This is my coming clean. It was my intention in this blog post to discuss just McLean, but I found myself deeply immersed in other aspects of Plath's recovery. The other thing I was mistaken about will be discussed in a separate blog post. I suppose I need to state from the outset that I am drawing conclusions from Plath's actual experiences from what she wrote in The Bell Jar and vice versa, taking information from the novel that is presently unconfirmed or murky and applying it to Plath's biography. There is enough in The Bell Jar , I think, based on real life to make these decisions. At the same time, I like to think that I know enough to distinguish where things are authentic and where details were clearly made up, slightly fudged, or out of chronological order. McLean Hospital was Plath's third and last
